Identify the thread family first
Hydraulic hose fittings are not selected by appearance alone. A straight male fitting, a 90 degree elbow or a female swivel may look similar across different standards, but the thread angle, thread pitch, sealing surface and port design can be completely different.
For B2B buyers, the first step is to identify the thread family used on the machine, valve block, cylinder, pump or existing hose assembly. If the wrong thread family is selected, the fitting may tighten for a few turns and still leak under pressure, damage the equipment port or create a hidden failure risk.
- Check whether the connection is inch, metric, British pipe or SAE based.
- Measure thread outside diameter and pitch instead of relying only on photos.
- Confirm male or female end type, straight or elbow body, and hose tail style.
Understand how the fitting seals
A hydraulic connection does not seal just because the threads match. The sealing point may be a 37 degree flare, a 60 degree cone, a bonded washer, an O-ring face seal or the thread itself. This is why two fittings with similar diameters can behave very differently after installation.
JIC fittings usually seal on the 37 degree flare. BSPP often uses a bonded seal or O-ring at the port face. BSPT and NPT rely on tapered pipe threads. ORFS uses an O-ring on the flat face, which gives strong leakage control in vibration-sensitive systems. Metric fittings may use DIN 24 degree cone, O-ring, washer or other metric sealing formats depending on the equipment.
- Do not mix sealing methods unless an adapter is designed for that conversion.
- Check whether the old fitting seals on the thread, cone, face or washer.
- For leakage-sensitive equipment, consider ORFS or correctly specified O-ring sealing connections.
Know the common fitting types
JIC fittings are widely used on North American equipment and many export hydraulic systems. They are popular because they are easy to source, practical for service work and available in many straight, elbow and tee configurations.
BSP fittings are common on European, British and many Asian machines. Buyers need to distinguish BSPP parallel threads from BSPT tapered threads, because the sealing method and port preparation are different.
NPT fittings are common in industrial fluid systems and many machines built for the North American market. The tapered thread can seal effectively, but it should not be forced into BSP ports.
ORFS fittings are often used where leakage control is important, especially in high pressure, high vibration or cleaner hydraulic systems. Metric fittings are common on European OEM machinery and should be confirmed by pitch, cone angle and DIN reference when possible.
Match the fitting to the hose assembly
The fitting standard is only one part of the assembly. Buyers also need to match the hose type, ferrule, crimping data, fitting material and plating. A fitting that is correct for the port may still fail if the hose tail or ferrule is not compatible with the selected hose.
For example, a two-wire braided hose, spiral hose and thermoplastic hose may require different fitting tails or crimping parameters. One-piece fittings can improve assembly consistency, while two-piece fittings may give more flexibility for distributors managing many hose series.
- Confirm hose series before selecting ferrules and hose tails.
- Ask for crimp diameter or assembly guidance when ordering complete hose assemblies.
- Use stainless steel only when corrosion resistance or media compatibility justifies the cost.
Standardize repeat orders and reduce mistakes
For distributors, repair companies and OEM buyers, a clear naming system is often more important than a long product list. Repeat orders become much easier when every part number includes thread type, size, body shape, hose size, sealing method, material and surface treatment.
If the existing part is not clearly marked, send photos from multiple angles, measure the thread, and include the machine brand or port drawing. For mixed fleets, it is also useful to keep a small thread identification kit so service teams can separate JIC, BSP, NPT, ORFS and metric connections before placing orders.
- Keep a record of thread standard, size, angle, body shape and plating.
